  • Description

The President of Portugal, Antonio Ramalho Eanes, began a four-day visit to Yugoslavia on Tuesday(26 June), at the invitation of President Josip Broz Tito. The two leaders planned to discuss a wide range of subjects from the SALT II Treaty, to southern Africa.

SYNOPSIS: President Eanes and his wife travelled aboard the yacht Podgorka from Pula airport to President Tito's summer home on Brioni island in the Adriatic sea.

The visit follows the recent conference of the Non-Aligned Nations' Foreign Ministers in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It precedes the sixth conference to be held in Havana, Cuba, in September.

Although Portugal is a member of NATO, it has been an observer at the non-aligned conferences. President Eanes said in Portugal that his trip, made during a government crisis, showed how strong Portugal's institutions were.

Yugoslav-Portuguese relations are close. Yugoslavia was one of the first Communist countries to recognise the Portuguese government following the nineteen seventy-four coup which swept away a fifty-year-old dictatorship.
