  • Description

THE PEOPLE OF WESTERN SAMOA IN THE PACIFIC ARE STILL CLEARING UP AFTER LAST WEEK'S DEVASTATING HURRICANE. TEN PEOPLE DIED AS 100 MILES AN HOUR (110 K.P.H.) GALES SWEPT ACROSS THE ISLAND GROUP. SO GREAT WAS THE DAMAGE TO CROPS THAT IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT THE 114,000 INHABITANTS HAVE ONLY ABOUT 10 WEEKS' FOOD SUPPLY LEFT.

THE PRIME MINISTER OF WESTERN SAMOA -- FIAME MATA'AFA -- IS CONCERNED BECAUSE, HE SAYS, HIS PEOPLE DO NOT REALISE THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE SITUATION. "THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN HUNGRY IN THEIR LIVES." HE HAS BANNED CRICKET ON FIVE DAYS A WEEK -- A MOVE INTENDED TO SHOCK THE ISLANDERS INTO REALISATION OF THE SITUATION.

THE HURRICANE COMPLETELY DESTROYED BANANA PLANTATIONS AND COCONUT CROPS (SOURCE OF WESTERN SAMOA'S EXPORTS OF COPRA) -- AND THESE WILL TAKE AT LEAST A YEAR TO REPLACE.

HELP CAME AT ONCE FROM NEW ZEALAND. WESTERN SAMOA WAS A NEW ZEALAND PROTECTORATE UNTIL IT BECAME INDEPENDENT IN 1962. THE NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT HAS MADE A GIFT OF GBP10,000 (N.Z.) AND THE NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS HAS LAUNCHED A NATION-WIDE APPEAL. HERCULES TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT OF THE ROYAL NEW ZEALAND AIR FORCE HAVE BEEN LANDING AT APIA WITH URGENTLY NEEDED RELIEF SUPPLIES AND A CARGO OF 65,000 TONS OF CANNED FOODS IS BEING SENT FROM NEW ZEALAND BY SEA.
