  • Description

Support for a republic - and the removal of Emperor Haile Selassie - has been accelerating throughout Ethiopia in recent weeks.

Military representatives and local government officials have been conducting a campaign to discredit the 82-year old Emperor, claiming he "gave birth to a society of thieves and exploiters."
A speech by the governor of Gojjam Governorale, north of the capital, Addis Ababa on Tuesday (3 September) was an example of the kind of attacks being levelled at the Emperor.

Addressing a crowd of 6,000 in the provincial capital, Debra Markos, Lij Haile Mariam Kebeke said the Ethiopian Armed Forces committee was working to rid the country of the injustices perpetrated by the nobility and corrupt officials of the former Government.

Lij Haile Mariam said corruption had made people apathetic towards developing the country and he called on them to participate in schemes such as building roads, schools and community health centres.

The rally was also addressed by the Deputy Governor, Fitawrari Haile Biru. Archbishop Abuna Markos of Gojjam gave benedictions at the end of the rally and called for prayers for the development of Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, in Addis Ababa, the Armed Forces Coordinating Committee has been moving cautiously to strip Emperor Haile Selassie of his last vestiges of power. Since February, about 170 of the Emperor's former Minister,s civil and military officials, provincial governors and judges have been arrested.

There have been riots against the Emperor in the capital and the members of the Armed Forces Committee - now the real rulers of Ethiopia-have left little doubt that they intend to abolish the monarchy altogether.
