Background: Piccadilly Circus is to stay gay and cheerful as the centre of the world, with plenty of bright lights. That's the decision of the London County Council. Labour and Tories united-- with only one dissenting voice---- in approving this policy of the Town Planning Committee.
Miss L.F. Nettlefold, millionaires and main voice in the keep-Piccadilly-as-it-is-campaign, said that Piccadilly is a beautiful mess. The trouble with town planners is that they cannot abide beautiful messes. She said that they are very similar to house-proud housewives who forever polish and clean so that no one is happy in their homes.
Mr.H.Sebag-Montefiore, another Tory Councillor, said that the continual shower from the Eros fountain had driven away the Piccadilly Circus flower-sellers. He thought that the fountain should be so control as to follow one or two flower girls to set up business without being deluged.
The lone critic of the bright lights, Mr. Tom Braddock, an architect, said that Piccadilly Circus strike him as an absolute degradation. He asked how many truthly say that the garish, vulgar advertising matter surrounding Piccadilly was gay.
