    special meeting at the United Nations General Assembly was held on Wednesday (11 October) to observe International Anti-Apartheid year. The Jamaican Prime Minister, Mr Michael Manley, urged land, sea and air sanctions against South Africa, before he was presented with an award for his work against apartheid. The Chairman of the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid, Mr Leslie Harriman, from Nigeria, spoke after greater effort against apartheid.

    SYNOPSIS: Mr Manley's speech received a standing ovation. He and other award winners then assembled, and he was presented with a gold medal by the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid, which is headed by Mr Leslie Harriman of Nigeria. The anti-apartheid observance came at a time when feelings were running strongly among some delegates in the United Nations against South Africa's reluctance to accept the UN's plan for transition to independence in Namibia (South West Africa.)
    The United Nations Secretary General, Dr Kurt Waldheim, made the presentation, and then Mr Harriman spoke.
