Background: HAROLD STASSEN HAS HARDLY BEEN SEEN IN WASHINGTON SINCE HE TRIED TO DUMP NIXON, AND FAILED....AND THEN RAN FOR GOVERNOR OF PENNSYLVANIA AND FAILED. TODAY ... HE WAS BACK. HE SPENT AN HOUR IN CONFERENCE WITH PRESIDENT EISENHOWER ... THEN CAME OUTSIDE AND PLUNGED HEAD FIRST INTO A DISCUSSION OF 1960 REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS. LIKE THIS:
THE WHITE HOUSE WAS QUICK TO SAY STASSEN'S VIEWS WERE HIS OWN, NOT THE PRESIDENTS.

STASSEN IS, OF COURSE, OUT OF OFFICE NOW ... AND PRACTICING LAW IN PHILADELPHIA. BUT HE STILL HAS HIS OLD HOBBY ... TRYING TO GET NIXON OFF THE REPUBLICAN TICKET .... TO OCCUPY HIS SPARE TIME FOR ANOTHER TWO YEARS.

HAROLD STASSEN REAPPEARED BRIEFLY ON THE POLITICAL SCENE TODAY TO LIST THE POSSIBLE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR 1960. HE MADE ONE NOTABLE OMISSION.

STASSEN, A PHILADELPHIA LAWYER, WAS DEFEATED IN THE PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNORSHIP PRIMARY EARLIER THIS YEAR. TODAY, HE CALLED ON PRESIDENT EISENHOWER. WHILE STILL AT THE WHITE HOUSE, HE GAVE THESE VIEWS.

IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARD, THE WHITE HOUSE DISASSOCIATED ITSELF FROM STASSEN'S REMARKS
