  • Description

AS THE ISRAELI ARMY SPOKESMAN HAS ALREADY ANNOUNCED, THIS OPERATION WAS CARRIED OUT IN THE WAKE OF CONTINUOUS AGGRESSION WAGED BY THE EGYPTIAN ARMY IN THE SUEZ CANAL AREA. DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST ALONE, OVER 500 VIOLATIONS OF THE CEASE-FIRE HAVE BEEN COMMITTED BY THE EGYPTIANS, INCLUDING OPENING OF FIRE, SHELLING, SABOTAGE AND MININGS.

IN THIS OPERATION THE ISRAEL DEFENCE FORCES ONCE AGAIN SHOWED THEIR CUSTOMARY EFFICACY. THEY OPERATED FOR TEN HOURS WITH CONSIDERABLE STRENGTH IN ENEMY TERRITORY IN ACCORDANCE WITH A PRE-PLANNED TIME-TABLE.

THE RAID WAS MEANT TO STRIKE AT THE BASES AND CONCENTRATIONS OF THE EGYPTIAN ARMY WHICH HAVE SERVED AS A BASE FOR COMMANDO UNITS LAYING MINES AND LAUNCHING ATTACKS AGAINST ISRAELI POSITIONS. THE OPERATION WAS CARRIED OUT PRECISELY ACCORDING TO PLAN, FROM THE TIME OF LANDING TO THE RETURN OF OUR FORCES WITH ALL THEIR EQUIPMENT.

THIS OPERATION, LIKE PREVIOUS ONES CARRIED OUT BY THE ISRAEL DEFENCE FORCES, WAS AIMED AT DRIVING HOME TO THE EGYPTIAN AUTHORITIES AND THE OTHER ARAB STATES THAT AGGRESSION CANNOT FAIL TO EVOKE APPROPRIATE REACTION.

WE HAVE REPEATEDLY STATED THAT, IN THE ABSENCE OF PEACE, WE ARE READY AND WILLING TO COMPLY STRICTLY WITH THE CEASE-FIRE. THE ONLY CONDITION IS RECIPROCITY. THIS APPLIES TO EGYPT AS TO ALL NEIGHBORING ARAB STATES. EGYPT NOT ONLY FLAGRANTLY VIOLATES THE CEASEFIRE DAY IN DAY OUT. BUT THE EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT HAS PROCLAIMED THAT HE DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE VERY EXISTENCE OF THE CEASE-FIRE -AND - CONTINUOUSLY ACTS ACCORDINGLY.

ISRAEL ONCE MORE REITERATES HER READINESS AND DESIRE TO ABIDE FULLY BY ALL THE CEASE-FIRE ARRANGEMENTS. IF EGYPT AND THE REST OF THE NEIGHBOURING ARAB COUNTRIES WILL KEEP THE PEACE, THEY WILL FIND FULL RECIPROCITY ON OUR PART.

    THE ISRAEL ARMY SPOKESMAN ANNOUNCES:
BECAUSE OF THE CONTINUED INITIATED EGYPTIAN AGGRESSION, LAST NIGHT (8/9 SEPTEMBER 1969) AN ARMOURED RAIDING FORCE OF THE ISRAEL DEFENCE FORCES WAS LANDED ON THE EGYPTIAN COAST OF THE GULF OF SUEZ.

THE RAID FORCE WHICH INCLUDED TANKS CARRIED OUT ITS OPERATION FOR TEN HOURS IN THE SECTOR STRETCHING FROM EL HAFAYER (ABOUT 40 KM. SOUTH OF THE TOWN OF SUEZ) TO THE AREA OF RAS-ZA FARANA (ABOUT 90 KM. SOUTH OF SUEZ).

THROUGH RAPID PROGRESS, THE FORCE ATTACKED GUARD POINTS, ARMY CAMPS, RADAR STATIONS, MILITARY VEHICLES AND MILITARY ENCAMPMENTS, AND INFLICTED ON THE ENEMY DOZENS OF CASUALTIES, BOTH KILLED AND INJURED, AND ALSO CAUSED HEAVY DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS, INSTALLATIONS AND VEHICLES.

THE FORCE OPERATED TOGETHER WITH THE ISRAEL NAVY AND THE ISRAEL AIR FORCE. THE AIR FORCE ATTACKED VARIOUS TARGETS, INTER ALIA AN S.A.2 BATTERY IN EL HAFAYER AND PUT IT OUT OF ACTION. DURING THE ATTACKING OPERATIONS OF THE ISRAEL AIR FORCE AND ISRAELI PLANE WAS HIT ANTI-AIRCRAFT FIRE AND ITS PILOT WAS SEEN PARACHUTING INTO THE SUEZ GULF. A WIDESCALE SEARCH IS BEING CARRIED OUT FOR HIM, BUT HE HAS NOT YET BEEN FOUND. HIS FAMILY HAVE BEEN INFORMED.

ENEMY PLANES AND VESSELS DID NOT INTERFERE OR HINDER ISRAELI FORCES DURING THE WHOLE OPERATION. THE ARMOURED RAIDING FORCE LEFT ENEMY TERRITORY, AS PLANNED AT NOON-TIME AND RETURNED TO ITS BASES WITH ALL ITS MEN AND EQUIPMENT. ONE ISRAELI SOLDIER WAS SLIGHTLY WOUNDED. 15.40 HOURS.

MINISTER OF DEFENCE ON RAID INTO EGYPT
THE DEFENCE MINISTER, MR. MOSHE DAYAN, SAID TONIGHT (TUESDAY 9 SEPTEMBER) THAT THE ISRAELI RAID THE WESTERN SHORE OF THE GULF OF SUEZ HAS INFLICTED A HEAVY AND SHOCKING BLOW ON THE EGYPTIANS, AND THAT THEY MAY EXPECT EVEN HEAVIER STRIKES.

IN HIS APPRAISAL OF THE STANDARD OF THE OPERATION, THE DEFENCE MINISTER SAID THAT IT WAS DIFFICULT AND COMPLICATED OPERATION, INVOLVING GROUND, SEA AND AIR FORCES - AS WELL AS AN AMBITIOUS AND PARTLY EVEN ACROBATIC ONE.

IN HIS OPINION, THE RAID ILLUSTRATED OPERATIONAL ABILITY - ALMOST UNPRECEDENTED IN MILITARY HISTORY.

MR. DAYAN SAID THAT THE SINKING OF EGYPTIAN TORPEDO BOATS ON MONDAY MORNING AND THE GROUND OPERATION ON THE SHORES OF EGYPT WERE, IN FACE, TWO STAGES OF THE SAME OPERATION.

IN REPLY TO QUESTIONS ASKED BY AN ISRAEL TELEVISION INTERVIEWER, MR. DAYAN SAID THAT THIS OPERATION IS NOT EXPECTED TO COMPLETELY QUIET DOWN THE EGYPTIAN FRONT, HOWEVER, IT HAS NO DOUBT INFLICTED A VERY HEAVY BLOW. MR. DAYAN SAID HE WAS NOT OF THE OPINION THAT THE ISRAEL ARMY RAID HAS BROUGHT THE SITUATION TO THE FROM THEIR LINES. TRUE, HE SAID, THAT THERE HAS BEEN INTENSIFIED FIRING ON EGYPTIAN LINES, AND THAT TODAY'S STRIKE REFLECTS ISRAEL'S REACTION TO THE SITUATION. TODAY'S RAID WAS ONE OF OUR OCCASIONAL, SELECTIVE ACTIONS FROM POINT OF VIEW OF TIME, PLACE, AND EQUIPMENT USED.

IN EXPRESSING HIS REGRETS OVER ISRAEL'S LOSSES RESULTING FROM TODAY'S OPERATION - THE THREE NAVAL MEN ACCIDENTALLY KILLED FOLLOWING THE OPERATION, AND THE MISSING PILOT - MR. DAYAN SAID WE MUST REALISE THAT WARLIKE OPERATIONS USUALLY INVOLVE CASUALTIES, ''ALL OUR FORCES RETURNED SAFELY.'' 21.10 HOURS.
