  • Description

UNITED STATES TROOPS, MAINTAINING THEIR CLOSE WATCH ON THE SITUATION IN BERLIN, HAVE RECENTLY HELD A SERIES OF EXERCISES IN THE GRUNEWALD FOREST TO TEST THE CITY'S DEFENCES. ON MAR 21, TROOPS FROM THE BERLIN GARRISONS, SUPPORTED BY TANKS AND HELICOPTERS, CARRIED OUT MANOEUVRES THERE.

LATER THE SAME DAY, ON AN AUTOBAHN NEAR BAD HERSFELD, CLOSE TO THE EAST GERMAN BORDER, THE U.S. 14TH ARMOURED CAVALRY REGIMENT DEMONSTRATED ITS POWER AND MOBILITY IN A MARCH-PAST AT THE END OF A PERIOD OF ROAD MARCH TRAINING.

EACH SQUADRON HAD MADE AN INDEPENDENT MARCH CONFERENCE ON THE AUTOBAHN FOR THE MARCH-PAST. THE DISPLAY SHOWED CLEARLY THE COMPOSITION OF THE PLATOONS AS A COMBINED TEAM OF FOUR WEAPONS - MOTORISED MACHINE GUNS, A MEDIUM TANK SECTION, AN ARMOURED INFANTRY SQUAD, AND A MEDIUM MORTAR SQUAD.

AT THE CLIMAX OF THE PARADE, THE SALUTE WAS TAKEN BY GENERAL WATERS, CHIEF OF STAFF, 5TH CORPS. FOR THE PARADE, UNITS CAME FROM FULDA, BAD HERSFELD, AND BAD KISSINGEN. SUPPORTING THEM WAS A FLY-PAST BY THE ARMY'S FLYING CORPS. THE 14TH ARMOURED CAVALRY CORPS IS THE SENIOR U.S. ARMY TACTICAL UNIT IN EUROPE.
