  • Description

A large crowds of demonstrators carrying banners and shouting anti-United States and anti-NATO slogans lined streets in Nicosia as Greek-Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides prepared to welcome Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Leonid Ilyichev to Nicosia on Wednesday (18 September). The Soviet Minister planned to hold separate discussions to the Cyprus crisis with the leaders of both the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities.

The Nicosia crowd expressed their support for the Russian-sponsored plan for an 18-nation conference on Cyprus and withdrawal of all foreign troops on the island. They shouted slogans and waved banners demanding 'Independence, Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity and the return of Makarios', the former president.

After two and a half hours talks with Mr. Clerides, the Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister, who is on the final leg of his visit to Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, declared that there has been a concurrence of views between himself and Mr. Clerides.

However, Mr. Rauf Denktash, the Turkish-Cypriot leader unhesitatingly reaffirmed his opposition to the Soviet plan. He told newsmen that such a conference would do more harm that good.
