  • Description

Although the Olympic Games are almost a year away, Australian athletes have been following a strict winter training programme in the gyms and on the tracks at Melbourne and Sydney to ensure success at Rome.

Top swimming stars, Ilsa and Jon Conrads are following a careful indoor schedule laid down by their coach, Don Talbot. Jon, who holds six world records, began training on land last May. Exercise and more exercise is the theme...and Australia's diving hopes spend hours perfecting their routines at Jack Barnett's Sydney diving school. Here they are joined by Susan knight, springboard champion, Barry Holmes, highboard champion and John Pakarinen, Finnish champion, now living in Australia.

For more difficult dives, the athletes use a harness to break the fall. The harness is attached by wire ropes to a steel frame and a pulley system. The ropes are manipulated by the coach and the system helps the divers to correct even the smallest faults.

Even for Marlene Mathews, one of Australia's top sprinters, there's no let-up.

Training in Melbourne, on similar lines to Soviet athletes, are Chiller Porter, high-jumper Colin Ridgway, Morrie Rich and Ian Tomlinson. Cross country running and weight lifting from their basic training.

Australia's first Olympic ice hockey team is preparing for the winter Games, which will be at Squaw Valley, California, USA from February 18-28 next year. Twelve teams will compete and Australia is hopeful of her chances.
