    IN CYPRUS, NEW MOVES TO KEEP THE PEACE. IT WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY (TUESDAY) THAT BOTH GREEK AND TURKS ON THE ISLAND HAD AGREED TO THE SETTING UP OF A FREE ZONE IN NICOSIA, IN WHICH U.N. TROOPS WILL HAVE EXCLUSIVE PATROL AND POLICE RIGHTS.

    THE ZONE - TWO HUNDRED YARDS WIDE - WILL FOLLOW THE CEASE-FIRE LINE FIXED LAST DECEMBER. U.N. TROOPS UNDER THE NEW PEACE KEEPING FORCE COMMANDER, GENERAL THIMAYYA, WILL HAVE THE POWER TO SEARCH, ARREST AND DETAIN ANYONE IN THE ZONE.

    GENERAL THIMAYYA ARRIVED IN CYPRUS YESTERDAY TO ASSUME HIS COMMAND FROM HIS FELLOW COUNTRYMAN, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL PREM GYANI, WHO ASKED TO BE RELIEVED OF HIS DUTIES FOR PERSONAL REASONS.

    GENERAL GYANI AND TOP OFFICIALS OF THE CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT WELCOMED THE NEW COMMANDER WHEN HE FLEW INTO NICOSIA. IT'S EXPECTED THAT GENERAL THIMAYYA WILL ASSUME FULL COMMAND DURING THE NEXT TEN DAYS AFTER BRIEFING BY HIS PREDECESSOR.

    IN THE MEANTIME, IT'S BEEN ANNOUNCED IN GENEVA THAT GREECE'S AMBASSADOR TO BELGRADE, MR. DIMITRI NIKOLAREIZIZ, HAS BEEN NAMED AS HIS COUNTRY'S ENVOY TO THE CYPRUS NEGOTIATIONS IN THE SWISS CITY.

    DELEGATES FROM GREECE, TURKEY, BRITAIN, THE UNITED STATES WILL TAKE PART IN THE NEGOTIATIONS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE UNITED NATIONS MEDIATOR ON CYPRUS, MR. SAKARI TUOMIOJA. THE TALKS ARE DUE TO GET UNDERWAY LATER THIS WEEK.
