  • Description

H.M.S. BULWARK, BRITAIN'S FIRST COMMANDO SHIP, MET HER SISTER-SHIP, H.M.S. ALBION, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE GULF OF ADEN YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). THE 26,000-TON ALBION STEAMED INTO PORT TO REPLACE THE BULWARK FOR SERVICE IN THE MIDDLE AND FAR EAST.

THE BULWARK WAS CONVERTED IN 1958 FROM THE CONVENTIONAL TYPE OF AIRCRAFT CARRIER TO ON DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE RAPID TRANSPORT OF TROOPS TO TROUBLE SPOTS. ABOARD THE ALBION, AS SHE PREPARES TO MOVE TO FAR EASTERN WATERS, ARE A ROYAL MARINE COMMANDO, WITH ITS ARTILLERY BATTERY, AND TWO SQUADRONS OF HELICOPTERS TO AIRLIFT THEM.

LESSONS LEARNED IN THE OPERATION CARRIED OUT FOUR YEARS AGO ON THE BULWARK HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED IN THE SISTER-SHIP. THE ALBION'S CONVERSION COST FOUR MILLION POUNDS: MESS-DECKS WERE GUTTED AND NEW ACCOMMODATION WAS INSTALLED; AIR CONDITIONING WAS IMPROVED TO THE POINT WHERE EACH MAN HAS HIS OWN COOL AIR DEVICE. THE ALBION IS EQUIPPED WITH TWO EVAPORATORS, EACH PRODUCING SEVEN TONS OF FRESH WATER AN HOUR - SUFFICIENT FOR A DAILY THIRTY GALLONS FOR EACH MAN.

THE BULWARK LEAVES FOR BRITAIN ON SUNDAY (25 NOVEMBER) BRINGING SEVEN HUNDRED MEN OF NO. 41 COMMANDO HOME FOR CHRISTMAS LEAVE.
