Background: The Constellation has been sailing out of San Diego for the last four years...But never quite like it sailed today for Bremerton Washington with 26-hundred crewmen ??? of their wives and children...some of their possessions and even some of their pets.
It was quite a job getting every one and every thing abroad, but it went off without any major problems.
The crew is being transferred along with the ship.
And since there was plenty of room left over, the Navy thought it just might save money and headaches to take the families along with the men rather then move them separately later.
The carrier's flight deck...with 700 hundred cars lashed to it...looked like a parking lot. There was one plane...An F 8 the navy is giving to the city of Bremerton.
Officials from Puget Sound are also on board for the three day drip...They'll brief the families on what to expect in their new home town.
There is plenty of room on board, but the Connie is a warship... not designed to carry women and children so..Some temporary alterations were necessary.
The officers staterooms have been made available to the female passengers...The males will live in the enlisted men's quarters.
One of the ward roms has been converted to a nursery.
There are some last minute details to take care of...Like converting paet of the hanger deck into a basketball court.
With the planes gone, there was enough room left over to park a couple of hundred motorcycles on one end of the deck...And to house the dogs, cats and at least one pet snake of the other end.
Ship departures are usually rather tearful affairs, for those left waiting on the dock...
But this time, there was no crying because there was no left on the Dock...There were all on board the U.S.S. castellation when it sailed from San Diego.
