  • Description

MASAHIKO "FIGHTING" HARADA OF JAPAN RETAINED THE WORLD BANTAMWEIGHT BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP IN TOKYO ON TUESDAY WHEN HE OUTPOINTED EDER JOFRE, OF BRAZIL, OVER 15 ROUNDS.

IT IS ALMOST EXACTLY A YEAR SINCE HARADA WON THE TITLE FROM JOFRE. FOR THE JAPANESE BOXER IT WAS HIS SECOND SUCCESSFUL VICTORY IN A TITLE DEFENCE, AS HE OUTPOINTED ALAN RUDKIN OF BRITAIN IN TOKYO LAST NOVEMBER.

JOFRE, WHO AT 30 YEARS OLD WAS CONCEIDING SEVEN YEARS, FOUGHT WITH BLOOD STREAMING FROM A BADLY CUT LEFT EYE IN THE LAST TWO GRUELLING ROUNDS, IN WHICH BOTH MEN TRIED FOR A KNOCKOUT..
THE CROWD OF 15,000 SCREAMED AND CHEERED THROUGHOUT THE FIGHT. HARADA BEGAN TO TAKE CONTROL IN THE FIFTH ROUND WITH HS JOBBING LEFT AND HARD RIGHTS TO THE BODY. BUT IN THE SEVENTH ROUND THE PLUCKY BRAZILIAN CAUGHT HARADA WITH A SOLID RIGHT TO THE HEAD WHICH FORCED THE CHAMPION TO PUSH AND CLINCH. AMERICAN REFEREE NICKIE POPE, WARNED HARADA FOR PUSHING.

HARADA LAUNCHED A FIERCE BODY ATTACK IN THE EIGHT, BUT JOFRE COUNTERED WITH A HARD LEFT TO THE JAW WHICH DREW BLOOD FROM THE CHAMPION'S MOUTH.

THE TWO BOXERS KEPT UP THIS CROWD-PLEASING DISPLAY, AND BY THE 14TH ROUND JOFRE WAS MAKING A TREMENDOUS EFFORT FOR A KNOCKOUT. LATE IN THE ROUND HARADA, WITH A RIGHT TO THE HEAD, OPENED A WIDE CUT OVER JOFRE'S EYE. JOFRE WAS STILL FULL OF FIGHT IN THE LAST ROUND, THOUGH HIS FACE WAS A MASK OF BLOOD, BUT HARADA SCORED REPEATEDLY TO THE HEAD AND GAINED A UNANIMOUS VERDICT.
