In Bangladesh, President Ziaur Rahman has presented his first budget less than a month after coming to power in a massive election victory. General Zia says his budget is in line with promises he made during the election campaign.
SYNOPSIS: The President's aim is to rely heavily on the world's rich nations in the West and in the Middle East to help develop Bangladesh. His speech in the Presidential Palace in Dacca on Friday (30 June), less than a month after his election triumph, was seen as an early attempt to fulfil his promise to improve the country's economy. Ministers, civil and ministry officials and diplomats heard how the equivalent of 556-million Pounds would be spent in the next year to improve agricultural output, greater industrial activity and to control population growth. But currently Bangladesh can generate only 23 per cent of the expected investment. President Ziaur Rahman told his audience after 200 years of exploitation, Bangladesh would now demand assistance from the wealthy countries.
