  • Description

Transport to Britain by sea from the Hook of Holland and Scheveningen Harbour remained blocked on Wednesday (27 November) by Dutch lorry drivers protesting against Government attempts to regulate their working hours in the interests of safety.

Another twenty points along the borders with Belgium and Germany were also blocked by Dutch fruit and vegetable lorry drivers.

The protests began over the installation in lorries of a device to record driving and resting hours as prescribed under new legislation due to come into force on I December.

The drivers object to the recorder because, they claim, it will lead to a reduction in their working hours and consequently to lower wages.

At the Hook of Holland, a crane company asked by the authorities to help clear the blockade of lorries, joined the protesters in sympathy.
