Background: Two world-wide church organisations -- the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, and the International Congregational Council -- amalgamated at a historic ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, on Thursday (August 20).

After a brief ceremony during which the two churches signed a formal Act of Union, the delegates moved in procession to St. Andrews Church for a service of Celebration. Involved in the ceremony are representatives from 127 churches in 75 countries.

The new organisation will be known as the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (Presbyterian and Congregational). The general theme of the new assembly is "God reconciles and makes us free."
The union comes after a decade of negotiations and concludes the separate history of the two bodies. The new organisation embraces Christian communities throughout the world -- from Europe to countries of Asia and Latin America.

Chairman of the new body is the Rev. Simtim Misa from Ghana. At the unification service the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Dr Carson Blake, addressed the assembly.

After the sermons members of the new congregation prayed for the future of the new assembly. The fact that the historic ceremony has taken place on African soil symbolises the World-wide concern of the new grouping of Christian churches.
