  • Description

With air pollution a growing problem around the world the United States Navy has established a team of experts to provide naval installations with technical assistance in controlling and correcting pollution problems.

The group consists of three engineers and one technician from the U.S. Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory at Port Heuneme, California and is known as the Source Emissions Testing team ( SET ).

The SET team uses nearly one-hundred different tools and instruments in its work as each particular air pollution situation requires specific equipment to analyse emissions.

In order to carry out tests a simulated pollution station has been created with a smokestack which pours pollutants into the air. Samples of the gases emitted from the smokestack are taken and analysed in their volume, temperature and pressure measured.

Instruments used for the tests include a pyrometer which determines temperature, and a manometer which measures pressure.

By way of these tests the United States Navy hopes to be able to ease the pollution problem by finding means to purify or refine the gases which daily escape from industry and homes into the air.
