  • Description

THIRTY-SIX PASSENGERS AND TWO CREW MEMBERS OF AN ETHIOPIAN AIRLINER HIJACKED TO ADEN ON SATURDAY WERE RETURNED TO ADDIS ABABA YESTERDAY.

THREE OTHER CREW MEMBERS INCLUDING A HOSTESS REMAINED IN ADEN FOR QUESTIONING. OTHER PASSENGERS HAD BEEN SET DOWN AT DJIBOUTI AND DIRE DAWA, THEIR DESTINATIONS.

THE ETHIOPIAN AIRCRAFT, A DC-6B, REMAINED AT ADEN DURING FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ON A FLIGHT FROM THE ETHIOPIAN CAPITAL TO DJIBOUTI WHEN TWO ERITREAN NATIONALISTS FORCED THE PILOT TO LAND IN THE SOUTH YEMEN REPUBLIC.

THE PASSENGERS SAID THEY HAD BEEN WELL-TREATED BY THE YEMENI AUTHORITIES. ONE OF THEM SAID LATER THAT MOST OF THE PASSENGERS WERE UNAWARE OF THE HIJACK UNTIL IT WAS TIME TO LAND AT DIRE DAWA, THE FIRST SCHEDULED STOP.

HE ADDED THAT ONE OF THE HIJACKERS HAD MOVED INTO THE COCKPIT AND THE OTHER WAS SITTING QUIETLY IN HIS SEAT. ON LANDING IN ADEN THE MAN SITTING AMONG THE PASSENGERS BRANDISHED A HAND-GRENADE AND WARNED EVERYONE TO KEEP CLEAR. IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT AN ETHIOPIAN SECURITY GUARD ON THE AIRCRAFT SHOT HIM AT THE DOORWAY. THEN, ACCORDING TO THE PASSENGER, THERE WAS TREMENDOUS CONFUSION AND A LOT OF SHOOTING.
