  • Description

A NEW SLAUGHTER HOUSE NOW OPERATING IN FORT LAMY, CAPITAL OF CHAD, WILL AID THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMY AND ALLOW FOR EXPORTS TO DEVELOPING AFRICAN COUNTRIES. ALREADY THE INCREASE IN PRODUCTION IS EVIDENT AND THERE IS MORE MEAT AVAILABLE FOR HOME CONSUMPTION AND FOR EXPORT.

THE COMPLETION OF THE NEW FARCHA ABATTOIR IS JUST ONE STAGE IN THE CURRENT AGRICULTURAL PROGRAMME AND PART OF THE OVERALL FIVE-YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN. PRESIDENT FRANCOIS TOMALBAYE RECENTLY CALLED FOR FURTHER EFFORTS BY WORKERS TO HELP THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMY. THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL PRODUCTION, MR. RAYMOND NAIMBAYE, HAS ANNOUNCED THE INTRODUCTION OF SEVERAL SCHEMES FOR IRRIGATION, RANCH BREEDING AND COURSES FOR FARM MANAGERS.

AT THE SLAUGHTER HOUSE, THE ANIMALS ARE BLED ACCORDING TO MOSLEM TRADITION. AN ELECTRIC SAW IS USED TO CUT THE ANIMALS IN HALF; THEN THEY ARE SKINNED. THE ENTIRE PROCESS, FROM BLEEDING TO DESPATCH, TAKES ABOUT 20 MINUTES FOR AN OX OF AVERAGE SIZE.

A VETERINARY STAFF CHECKS THE CARCASSES FOR ANY SIGN OF DISEASE, AND THE NUMBER DECLARED UNFIT FOR CONSUMPTION IS NORMALLY WELL BELOW ONE PER CENT.

CARCASSES ARE STORED FOR TWO DAYS IN DEEP-FREEZE AND LATER IN NORMAL COLD STORAGE PLANTS.

THE INCREASE IN CATTLE REARING IN CHAD ALSO ASSISTS WITH OTHER COMMODITIES FOR THE HOME CONSUMER, AND FOR EXPORT. MILK, LEATHER AND SKINS ARE ALSO PROVIDING A BOOST TO THE ECONOMY.

PRESIDENT TOMALBAYE INTRODUCED THE FIVE-YEAR PLAN AIMED AT BOOSTING ANIMAL AND CROP PRODUCTION IN 1966 TO OFFSET THE ADVERSE TRADE BALANCE AND TO RAISE THE INCOME PER CAPITA OF THE POPULATION.
