  • Description

Former Greek President George Papadopoulos and two other ringleaders of the 1967 coup which abolished parliamentary rule and established a seven-year dictatorship were on Saturday (23 August) sentenced to death.

They were among a group of leading member of the military junta, which collapsed in July last year, found guilty of insurrection and high treason for their part in the coup.

Two others sentenced to death by civil high court in Athens were former tank commander, Sytlianos Pattakos, 62, and Nicholas Makarezos,55, a former intelligence officer. They both served as deputy premiers under Papadopoulos.

At the end of a 21-day trial, described as the Greek Nuremberg, the court sentenced eight other defendants to life imprisonment. Seven others were given prison terms ranging form five to 20 years while two were acquitted.

After the verdict was read to a packed court, the Greek Government indicated that the death sentences against the three junta leaders might be commuted.
