  • Description

Spanish journalist Julio Camarero was released by Uruguayan authorities on Monday night (24 August) after being questioned by a judge about an interview he claimed he had with a leader of the Tuperamaros Guerrilla organisation. The Tuperamaros are holding a Brazilian and an American as hostages until the Uruguayan government frees all political prisoners. But so far the government has refused to do a deal.

The Spanish newsman was arrested last Friday as he prepared to return to Madrid.

On leaving the Central Jail Senor Camarero told newsmen that the judge had respected his refusal not to reveal the name of the Tuperamaro leader.

Even as he spoke thousands of troops and police continued their search of Montevideo for the abducted men. Earlier the guerillas announced, in their first communique in two weeks, that the two men were alive and well but threatened further kidnapping of American officials.

The Uruguayan authorities have arrested dozens of suspected Tuperamaros in a vain attempt to get information of the guerrilla headquarters.
