  • Description

In the Dutch province of Overijesel an outbreak of poliomyelitis has started to take its toll of village children. Particularly hard hit is Staphorst where, in the past days, two children have died and 26 are seriously ill with the disease, which causes paralysis. Nearby towns have started immunisation programmes for their children and youth, but Staphorst, probably because of its rigidly-Calvinist approach to medical care, is only just starting to respond to health authority pleas.

When cameraman Jac de Gier visited Staphorst for Visnews, the village inhabitants were refusing to show themselves in the streets, and cameramen ran the risk of having their film and photographs confiscated by the local police.
