Background: Four-year-old Eric Peugeot, French motor film director's son kidnapped from a Saint-Cloud, Paris, golf-course, Apr. 12 and returned safely 2 days later, after his father paid a ransom estimated at between GBP35,000 and GBP60,000, appeared briefly with his family outside their Paris home, Apr. 15.

Press photographers took photos of the little boy cradled in his mother's arms, and of his millionaire father Roland Peugeot and brother, Jean-Philippe, standing hand-in-hand.

Monsieur Peugeot, eyes brimmed with tears as he made a television appeal to his son's captors, is keeping faith with them, and will give the police no information about the man to whom ransom money was handed.

French people launched the biggest manhunt on record - 30,000 police got Ministry of Interior orders to find the kidnappers. At one Paris road block they fired on a suspect car but the car's occupiers were not the kidnappers.

While Mr. Peugeot's lips remain sealed for fear of reprisal, Paris police feared this kidnapping right start others by kidnappers in search of easy money.

Kidnapping for ransom is rare in France. The Peugeot case is the first in which the kidnappers have received ransom money - in notes or gold coin, reports differ - and, so far, escaped.

At Versailles an examining magistrate opened a judicial enquiry against "X" - persons unknown - for kidnapping which in the case of a child found alive carries a penalty of hard labour for life.
