  • Description

Algerian Foreign Minister Abdel Aziz Bouteflika, who delivered the ruling which led to South Africa's suspension from the United Nations, was re-acclaimed President of the Assembly on Monday (1 September).

Mr. Bouteflika is only President for the twelve-day special session on economic issues. He will be succeeded by Luxembourg Prime Minister, Gaston Thorn, when this year's regular session begins on September 16.

Mr. Bouteflika thanked delegates from the 138 nations warmly for re-electing him and his team. He then made the opening speech in the U.N. General Assembly's seventh special session on world economic problems.

He said that by raising prices, petroleum exporting countries had ended countries of plunder and showed the way to economic liberation for other raw material producers.
