    IN THE COMING FIVE YEARS THE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT KUMASI IN GHANA PLANS TO SPEND ABOUT 750,000 NEW CEDIS ON RESEARCH, SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENT AND BUILDINGS FOR THE FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE. THE FACULTY HAS PLANNED PROJECTS OF DIRECT IMPORTANCE TO THE ECONOMY AND FARMING COMMUNITY.

    THE UNIVERSITY IS THE ONLY INSTITUTION IN GHANA WHICH OFFERS A DEGREE COURSE IN HORTICULTURE.

    THE MAIN INNOVATION IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION IS THEIR WORK TO ESTABLISH HYBRID PIGS FROM THE LOCAL 'ASHANTI DWARF' AND THE IMPORTED WHITE. THEY HOPE TO PRODUCE A BREED WITH A HIGH RESISTANCE TO DISEASE AND A HIGH AVERAGE LITTER SIZE AND BODY WEIGHT.

    A SOMEWHAT SIMILAR PROGRAMME FOR POULTRY DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN LAID OUT. HERE, THEY ARE WORKING TO DEVELOP AND POPULARISE HEALTHY EGG-LAYING AND MEAT-PRODUCING POULTRY, FED ON A BLEND OF LOCAL FOODSTUFFS.

    THE UNIVERSITY'S PINEAPPLE FARM IS ALREADY CAPABLE OF YIELDING UP TO 18 TONS OF PINEAPPLES AN ACRE. COMPARABLE YIELDS FROM HAWAII AND MALAYA ARE 13 TONS AND 3 POINT 6 TONS.
