  • Description

A group of young Puerto Ricans called "The Young Lords" went on the rampage in the Spanish-speaking section of New York's Harlem on Sunday night (14 June) after one of their members had been arrested.

They smashed windows, set fire to rubbish bins in the street and attacked police with stones and bottles. Seven policemen were reported injured, and nine people arrested.

The violence which lasted less than two hours followed the arrest of 16 years old Juan Ortiz, the Young Lord "Finance Minister", on charges of kidnapping, assault and robbery.

In the outburst a barrier of rubbish and mattresses was placed across major street and set alight, blocking traffic. Windows were also smashed in several shops and two supermarkets were looted.

The "Young Lords", mostly teenagers of 14 and 15 years, are a Latin equivalent of the Black Panthers and are becoming increasingly active among the poor Puerto Rican immigrants.
