  • Description

One of the worst blizzards in living memory swept East Central Sweden on Monday causing chaos on roads and disrupting rail and air traffic. In bitingly cold weather - temperatures around minus 10 degree centigrade - Stockholmers trudged through streets that were literally drenched in snow while snowploughs worked non-stop to keep main traffic routes open. There were long jam everywhere and cars were hardly able to crawl along. At times, throughout the day, visibility was almost down to zero as the snow was whirled into white blanket by the fierce wind.Outside the city on the main E 4 road orth, police patrols were stopping northbound traffic and warning drivers to head back to Stockholm. The road north of Uppsala about 40 miles from Stockholm was completely blocked.Within a short time conditions made most roads in the vicinity of Stockholm almost impassable and many cars ended up in ditches.Several cars crashed into others already brought to a standstill while many just slid off the roadway.Drivers sought shelter for the night on the Uppsala Road in a cafe, shown in the film, and there they had to sit or stand wherever they could find room.Their vehicles outside were quickly snowed in and the following day it took breakdown gangs many hours to get most of them clear. At sea, icebreakers were working round the clock to free ships trapped by the ice.
