  • Description

NEAR THE MUNICH TECHNICAL COLLEGE, AT THE SIEMENS-SCHUCKERT REACTOR STATION, ENGINEERS HAVE BUILT THE WORLD'S SMALLEST NUCLEAR REACTOR. ITS USE IS MAINLY CONFINED TO THE TRAINING OF PHYSICISTS AND ENGINEERS URGENTLY NEEDED FOR THE EVER-GROWING WORLD OF ATOMIC PHYSICS.

THIS SMALL REACTOR CAN BE ERECTED IN LECTURE-ROOMS AND LABORATORIES. A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER IS EXPECTED TO BE BOUGHT BY COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES AS WELL AS BY INDUSTRIAL ORGANISATIONS. BECAUSE OF ITS SMALLNESS, MANY PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH MORE COMMON REACTORS DO NOT ARISE WITH THIS EQUIPMENT. NO COOLING SYSTEM OR DISPOSAL PLANT ARE NECESSARY, WHILE IT CAN BE EASILY MOVED BY ROAD TRANSPORT.

TECHNICIANS BEING TRAINED ON THE REACTOR ARE SHOWN HOW TO INSERT THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF THE FUEL, URANIUM 235; ABOUT 30 MICROGRAMS ARE USED EACH YEAR. AND THEN, TO OPERATE THE REACTOR, THEY SPEND TIME MASTERING THE CONTROL PANEL, SCREENED BY A WATER TANK FROM RADIATION. COMPLEX RECORDING EQUIPMENT CENTRED AROUND AN OSCILLOGRAPH PROVIDES DATA FOR TECHNICIANS.
