    FOURTEEN AFRICAN STATES HAVE BEEN MEETING IN ABIDJAN, IVORY COAST, FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS TO DISCUSS WAYS OF BOOSTING TOURISM THROUGHOUT THE CONTINENT. THE GROUP ADOPTED THE NAME ORGANISATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICAN TOURISM.

    BEFORE THE MEETING THE GROUP WAS KNOWN AS THE AFRICAN INTER-STATES TOURISM OFFICE. THE EARLY GROUP HAD THIRTEEN MEMBERS, BUT GABON'S APPLICATION YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) BROUGHT THE ORGANISATION'S STRENGTH TO 14.

    OTHER COUNTRIES ARE: CAMEROUN, CONGO-KINSHASA, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE, THE IVORY COAST, DAHOMEY, UPPER VOLTA, MALI, MAURITANIA, NIGER, SENEGAL, THE CENTRAFRICAN REPUBLIC, CHAD AND TOGO.

    THE NEW TITLE, ACCORDING TO A RESOLUTION PASSED AT THE MEETING, WILL GIVE THE ORGANISATION A WIDER INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE.

    THE MEETING ALSO ADOPTED A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR MEMBER COUNTRIES TO PAY THEIR SUBSCRIPTIONS TO THE ORGANISATION WITH TWO MONTHS OF THE APPROVAL OF THEIR BUDGET.

    THE CONFERENCE CALLED FOR MORE TOURIST PUBLICITY, AND DECIDED TO HOLD AFRICAN TOURISM WEEK IN GENEVA NEXT JULY.

    A "MISS AFRICA" BEAUTY CONTEST WILL ALSO BE INTRODUCED.
