  • Description

President Salvador Allende, about to complete his first year as Marxist President of Chile, gave a wide-ranging interview on Sunday (31 October) on United States television. He was interviewed on the National Broadcasting Company programme "Meet the Press", with the questions coming from washington and the answers via satellite from Santiago. Viewers in the U.S. saw the Chilean President in black and white only.

President Allende was interviewed only days after a special tribunal in Santiago began hearings on objections by giant U.S. copper companies to Chile's no-compensation take-over of their assets.

The President stood firmly on his Government's decision to nationalise Chilean copper, but stressed that U.S. investment in other fields was still welcome.

A profile of Presidents Allende, to mark his first year in office, has been syndicated as Visnews Production No. 12873/71.
