Background: Six hundred top golfers are having to play off for the 96 remaining places in this years British Open Golf Championship at Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire.

The organisers have received a record entry of 678 and only the 60 biggest names do not have to fight for a place in the competition.1
Americans Ben Crenshaw, Phil Rodgers and PGA championship winner Al Gieberger were among those who had to come through the place off. They all qualified although only one in six entrants reached the competition proper.

Last year's winner Tom Weiskopf of the United States has returned to defend his title. South African Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, new American champion Hale Irwin and top British hope Tony Jacklin are also competing for the GBP 50,000 prize money.

For the first time the British Open will be played with the larger 1.68 inch ball - the one which most of the world's players already use.

The organisers expect a total of around 100,000 spectators during the competition which ends on Saturday (13 July).
