  • Description

Chicago University graduate student, Paul Beaver, has become a father for the first time, but there is a slight difference.

Mr. Beaver's family of two ... Nandu and ??? ... are South American Greater Rhea chicks.

The 24-year-old student and his wife, Erna, adopted the birds as part of an experiment on the process of attachment between young and parent.

Mr. Beaver was the first figure the chicks saw and has become their father ... or mother-hen figure.

Dad and the two chicks, their sex has not yet been determined, and now inseparable even to the point of taking daily walks through the university campus. The chicks, who were hatched in mid-July, stand about a foot tall and weigh slightly more than a pound.

Paul Beaver says the first week as a foster parent was the toughest.

"They even had to snuggle into bed with us, and when left alone they cried a very whistling wail that is their distress signal", he claims.

Mr. Beaver also acknowledged that he may soon not be the only man in their lives.

"Now they are getting to the age where they're starting to socialise with other people."
