  • Description

The 25,000 ton tanker "World Hope" - first sizeable ship ever to be built in Greece - was launched Dec 22 at the Hellenic Shipyards, Scaramanga Bay, by Mrs Amalia Karamanlis, wife of the Greek Premier.

In a speech before the launching, Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos mentioned the tragic loss last week of the "World Harmony" after collision in the Bosphorus near Istanbul. It is expected that the newly launched "World Hope", a motor ship with a speed of 15 knots will quickly replace the "World Harmony" in the Niarchos fleet.

Owned by Niarchos, the newly reconstructed shipyard at Scaramanga Bag - where Greek sea power scored a great victory against a Persian Fleet in 480 B.C. - has been converted at a cost of some GBP7 million to compete for ship construction and repair in the eastern Mediterranean.

Seeking to use some of his shipping profits earned abroad to diversify the industrially backward economy, Mr. Niarchos has stated that his shipyard will soon be giving employment to 3,000 men, few of whom knew the first thing about ship building three years ago.
