  • Description

MOST AMERICANS IN THE SOUTHERN CONGO-KINSHASA TOWN OF LUBUMBASHI (FORMERLY ELIZABETHVILLE) HAVE BEEN EVACUATED TO ZAMBIA FOLLOWING HEAVY FIGHTING NEAR THE ANGOLIAN BORDER BETWEEN CONGOLESE TROOPS AND MERCENARIES. THE STAFF OF THE UNITED STATES CONSULATE IN THE TOWN IS ALSO REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN EVACUATED.

THE CONSULATE CONTACTED ALL AMERICANS IN THE AREA TO EVACUATE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE UNITED STATES STATE DEPARTMENT. THE MOVE IS SAID TO BE A "NORMAL PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE". MANY OF THOSE WHO LEFT THE CONGO HAVE CHOSEN TO GO BACK TO THE UNITED STATES. THE FIRST BATCH OF AMERICANS - 25 OF THEM IN 9 CARS - ARRIVED AT THE ZAMBIAN BORDER POST OF KASUMBALESA LAST FRIDAY (NOVEMBER 3). THEY SAID THEY HAD BEEN GIVEN ONLY TWO HOURS NOTICE BY THE CONSULATE TO PACK THEIR BELONGINGS.

THE CONGOLESE PRESS AGENCY CLAIMS THAT THE MERCENARIES, WHO INVADED THE CONGO FROM ANGOLIA LAST WEEK, WERE RETREATING AFTER HEAVY FIGHTING. THE AGENCY ALSO CLAIMS THAT THE EASTERN TOW OF BUKAVU - WHERE FOREIGN MERCENARIES HAD BEEN ENTRENCHED SINCE LAT AUGUST - HAS FALLEN TO THEIR TROOPS. THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION SAID YESTERDAY THAT NATIONAL ARMY TROOPS NOW COMPLETELY CONTROLLED THE TOWN.
