  • Description

The ninth session of the Afro-Malagasy Sugar Council opened in Libreville on Tuesday to discuss a common policy on the importation and production of sugar. The opening session was chaired by the Gabon minister of posts and telegraphs, Mr. Bibalou Abibouka.

The Afro-Malagasy accord on sugar was agreed by the heads of State of the Afro-Malagasy nations. It ensures adequate supplies to importing nations and an adequate price to producing members. The conference in Libreville has been considering ways of coordinating better the needs of importers and producers.

Among some of the problems are taxation, price differences and the withdrawal of Senegal from the agreement.

The President of the sugar council, Mr. Emile Ramarasoana, said that during the five years of the agreement there had been a measure of resistance against the organisation due to the varying interests of certain member states.

The meeting ended on Wednesday (November 11).
