    THE PRESIDENT OF MALAWI, DR. KAMUZU BANDA, RECEIVED GUESTS FROM BLANTYRE'S "SISTER CITY" IN MISSOURI, USA, RECENTLY. THE GUESTS, MR. AND MRS. LAWRENCE SMITH, BROUGHT WITH THEM A GIFT OF 3,200 DOLLARS TO BUY THE CITY A NEW AMBULANCE.

    MR. SMITH IS THE CHAIRMAN OF THE INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI, CHAPTER OF THE PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE PROGRAMME, AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION WORKING TO FOSTER GREATER UNDERSTANDING AMONG PEOPLE.

    AS REPRESENTATIVE OF INDEPENDENCE --- BLANTYRE'S "SISTER CITY" MR. SMITH MET THE MAYOR AND LATER THE PRESIDENT.

    MR. SMITH SAID INDEPENDENCE WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE VISIT OF THE PRESIDENT DURING HIS FORTHCOMING TRIP TO THE UNITED STATES.

    HE SAID HE BROUGHT A CHEQUE INSTEAD OF SHIPPING AN AMBULANCE TO MALAWI. "WE THOUGHT IT WAS A BIT HARD TO DO SO, AND PREFERRED TO COME WITH MONEY SO THE CITY COULD BUY THE AMBULANCE HERSELF," HE SAID.

    A PARTY WAS ORGANISED AT THE CITY HALL, BLANTYRE, FOR THE CHEQUE PRESENTATION CEREMONY. THE MAYOR OF BLANTYRE, COUNCILLOR ERIC BRIGHT, ACCEPTED THE CHEQUE AS WELL AS A KEY TO THE CITY OF INDEPENDENCE.

    MR. AND MRS. SMITH SPENT FOUR DAYS IN THE MALAWIAN CAPITAL.
