  • Description

The Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Syria and Jordan met senior representatives of the Palestine Liberation organisation (PLO) in Cairo on Friday (3 January) to try to end the continuing feud between Jordan and the PLO.

They met informally in the headquarters of the Arab League. The meeting, lasting three hours, was to continue the next day with concrete discussions.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Mahmoud Riad, later described the talks as "fraternal, constructive and positive, and there had been no differences whatsoever."
Mr. Riad said he was optimistic about Palestinian/Jordanian relations following the meeting. He said the two parties had agreed to refrain from words and actions which would hinder the development of relations between them.

The four-party gathering was called for by the Arab Summit in Rabat, Morocco, last October, where for the first time Jordan joined its fellow Arabs in recognising the PLO as the sole representative of Palestinian people.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled to be held in the Syrian capital of Damascus next month for discussions on efforts to co-ordinate Arab policies on Israel.
