  • Description

The latest French deep-diving submarine, designed by the famous underwater team led by Commander Jaques Cousteau, has just made its first successful sea tests in the bay of Marseilles. Designated the SP 3000, the new submarine will study the ocean bed and underwater life at depths of up to almost 10,000 feet (3,000 metres).

The submarine, spherical in design and made of high-resistance steel, can carry a crew of three on underwater exploration missions. Only one submarine -- an American model -- can dive deeper and sustain greater underwater pressures.

Two electric motors give the SP 3000 a high degree of manoeuvrability. The compact design incorporates acoustic and optical probes, as well as hydraulic equipment for taking seabed samples.

When fully operational, the new submarine will have a range of 20 nautical miles. Depending on the mission to be accomplished, she will be able to stay submerged from eight to 48 hours.
