  • Description

The Lebanese government decided on Wednesday (23 May) to end the state of emergency declared in Lebanon on May 7 following the eruption of renewed clashed between Palestinian commandos and the army.

The decision was reached at a cabinet meeting in Beirut, chaired by Lebanon's President Suleiman Franjieh. It was also the first cabinet meeting since Lebanese Prime Minister Amin Al-Hafez decided to withdraw his resignation last Saturday (19 May).

In a statement to the press after Wednesday's meeting, Mr. Hafez said "We cannot relinquish Lebanon's sovereignty. Nor can we cease harbouring the struggling Palestinian brothers. Accordingly, by cancelling the state of emergency, we ensure an atmosphere of confidence which must prevail so that we may continue to co-exist on the one side and ensure further progress and prosperity for Lebanon."
Under the state of emergency, the Lebanese army took over the country's internal security. Military press censorship was also introduced.
