  • Description

SWITZERLAND AND BULGARIA BOTH ACHIEVED THEIR FIRST GOLD MEDALS IN THE EUROPEAN GAMES AT ATHENS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), WITH VICTORIES IN THE MEN'S 200 METRES AND THE 3,000 METRES STEEPLECHASE.

SWITZERLAND'S PHILIPPE CLERC - THE FASTEST EUROPEAN OVER THE DISTANCE THIS SEASON - WON HIS EXPECTED VICTORY IN THE 200 METERS FINAL.

HE PASSED THE TAPE IN 20.6 SECONDS FOR A CONVINCING VICTORY OVER EAST GERMANY'S HERRMANN BURDE AND POLE ZENON NOWOSZ, WHO BOTH CLOCKED 20.9 SECONDS.

BUT ALL EXPECTATIONS WERE SHATTERED IN THE 3,000 METRES STEEPLECHASE, IN WHICH NEW WORLD RECORD HOLDER VLADIMIR DUDIN HEADED A POWERFUL RUSSIAN TRIO.

THE RUSSIANS HEADED THE FIELD THROUGHOUT THE RACE. BUT IN THE LAST FEW YARDS, BULGARIAN MICHAIL JELEV BURST AHEAD TO SNATCH THE GOLD MEDAL FROM ALEKSANDR MOROZOV OF THE SOVIET UNION, WITH DUDIN HAVING TO CONTENT HIMSELF WITH THE BRONZE MEDAL FOR THIRD PLACE.
