    THE FIRST PHASE OF OPERATION MALHEUR, ENDED ON FRIDAY (JUNE 8) WITH 392 GUERRILLAS KILLED AND 162 WEAPONS CAPTURED. AMERICAN TROOPS LOST 51 KILLED AND 285 WOUNDED.

    LAUNCHED ONE MONTH AGO, THE OPERATION WAS CONCENTRATED IN THE COASTAL PROVINCE OF QUANG NGAI, ABOUT 320 MILES NORTHEAST OF SAIGON.

    INVOLVED IN THE MILITARY MANOEUVRES WERE AMERICAN PARATROOPERS OF THE 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION. THEY BELONG TO THE AMERICAN ARMY'S TASK FORCE 'OREGON' WHO WERE SENT IN TO THE NORTHERN PROVINCES AS REINFORCEMENTS FOR THE MARINES. THEY ARE TO BEGIN A SECOND PHASE OF THE OPERATION IN THE SAME AREA IMMEDIATELY.

    IN THE OPERATION, THE TROOPS WERE AIDED BY ARTILLERY, ARMED HELICOPTERS, TANKS AND VIETNAMESE JUNGLE TRACKERS AND DOGS.

    ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, AMERICAN B-52 JET BOMBERS SUPPORTED THEM. THESE BOMBERS FLEW IN FROM THAILAND AND GUAM ISLAND AND DROPPED TONS OF HIGH EXPLOSIVE ON ENEMY BASES, STORAGE AREAS AND TRAILS.

    BEFORE THE SECOND PHASE OF THE OPERATION, COMES INTO FORCE, THE AMERICANS EVACUATED SEVERAL VIETNAMESE FAMILIES FROM THE AREA. THEY ARE NOW SETTLED IN REFUGEE CAMPS AWAY FROM THE BATTLE SCENE.
