  • Description

A top Cambodian delegation is currently visiting Thailand on a five day state visit, and observers in Bangkok predict that the two countries will shortly establish diplomatic relations.

Informed sources in Bangkok have said that the setting up of diplomatic relations and the exchange of ambassadors between the two countries was discussed during lengthy talks between the Cambodian delegation, headed by the Cambodian Deputy Premier Ieng Sary and leaders of the Thai Government headed by the Thai Prime Minister, Kukrit Pramoj.

Mr. Ieng Sary is one of the top officials in the Khmer Rouge Movement and the man in charge of Cambodia's foreign affairs.

He is expected to sign a joint statement with the Thai Prime Minister, the Deputy Premier, Pramarn Adireksan and the Thai Foreign Minister Chatichai Choonhavan on Saturday (1 November).

The statement is expected to mention future cooperation between the two countries in the fields of trade and economic affairs and incorporate a joint commitment to the five principles of peaceful coexistence.

It is not yet certain whether the joint statement will mention the question of the more than ten thousand Cambodian refugees currently seeking safety in Thailand.

Most of the refugees are in camps near the Thai-Cambodian border.
