    THE 25,000-TON AUSTRALIAN AIRCRAFT CARRIER HMAS MELBOURNE LIMPED INTO SINGAPORE THIS AFTERNOON (FRIDAY) - 51/2 HOURS BEHIND SCHEDULE FROM THE SOUTH CHINA SEA WHERE ON TUESDAY SHE WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION WITH AMERICAN DESTROYER FRANK E. EVANS. THE MELBOURNE WITH A COMPLEMENT OF 1,200 OFFICERS AND RATINGS SAILED INTO THE SEMBAWANG SHIPYARD TO UNDERGO REPAIRS TO HER DAMAGED BOW AND FLIGHT DECK.

    THE MELBOURNE, FLYING ITS ENSIGN AT HALF-MAST, STEAMED INTO THE STRAITS OF JOHORE AT 11 KNOTS. SHE WAS DELAYED WHEN SHE SLOWED TO DITCH 14,000 TONS OF AVIATION FUEL 40 MILES OFF MALAYSIA.

    THE COLLISION OCCURRED DURING A SEA EXERCISE CODE-NAMED "SEA SPIRIT" ORGANISED BY THE SOUTH EAST ASIA TREATY ORGANISATION (SEATO). THE EVANS WAS CUT IN TWO AND HALF SANK WITH THE LOSS OF 73 LIVES.

    MEANWHILE, A JOINT U.S.-AUSTRALIAN NAVAL PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION INTO THE COLLISION WILL BE BEGIN AT SUBIC BAY, IN THE PHILIPPINES ON MONDAY.
