    QUEEN JULIANIA, PRINCE BERNHARD AND CROWN PRINCESS BEATRIX CONGRATULATED PAPING.THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE DISMISSED A COMPLAINT THAT PAPING HAD SKATED IN THE WAKE OF OUTSIDERS DURING THE 73-YEAR-OLD RACE.PAPING COMPLETED THE RACE, OVER FRIESLAND'S FROZEN CANALS AND RIVERS IN 10 HOURS 59 MINUTES - SOME 25 MINUTES AHEAD OF 32-YEAR-OLD JAN UITHAM WHO FINISHED SECOND.UITHAM TOLD THE ORGANISERS THAT HE WAS SURE THAT PAPING HAD NOT BEEN ASSISTED.

    IT WAS ANNOUNCED LATER THAT ONLY 56 OF THE 578 ENTRANTS HAD COMPLETED THE CIRCUIT WHEN THE RACE CLOSED.ABOUT 10,000 "TOURIST SKATERS" - WHOSE ONLY AIM IS TO FINISH THE TOUR - FOLLOWED THE COMPETITORS.THE "TOURISTS", WHO RECEIVE A MEDAL ON COMPLETION HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO QUALIFY BUT BY NIGHTFALL LESS THAN 30 PER CENT WERE STILL ON ICE.
