KENYA'S ASSISTANT AGRICULTURAL MINISTER, MR. J.M. KARIUKI, MADE A BREAK IN HIS CAMPAIGN FOR NEXT?

  • Description

KENYA'S ASSISTANT AGRICULTURAL MINISTER, MR. J.M. KARIUKI, MADE A BREAK IN HIS CAMPAIGN FOR NEXT WEEKEND'S ELECTIONS WHEN HE ATTENDED A MASS RALLY CELEBRATING LEADERS DAY AT NGONG STADIUM, NEAR NAIROBI, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY).

THE RALLY, ORGANIZED BY THE KAJIADO DISTRICT COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE, INCLUDED A PROGRAMME OF TRADITIONAL MASAI DANCING AND OF COMPETITIVE DANCING. LEADERS DAY IN THE DISTRICT BRINGS TOGETHER THE MASAI PEOPLE TO CELEBRATE THE YEAR'S COMMUNITY EFFORTS IN "HARAMBEE" -- SELF-HELP -- PROJECTS.

DURING THE COURSE OF THE RALLY, IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE GUEST OF HONOUR, MR. KARIUKI, HAD HIMSELF MADE AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO SELF-HELP SCHEMES, DONATING OVER 270,000 KENYAN SHILLINGS (OVER GBP15,800 STERLING ) TO THIS CAUSE.

AT THE END OF THE RALLY, HE WAS CEREMONIALLY MADE A MEMBER OF THE MASAI PEOPLE WHEN HE WAS PRESENTED WITH A MORAN SPEAR.

JUST PRIOR TO THE RALLY, MR. KARIUKI HAD MADE A SPEECH CALLING FOR EVEN GREATER EFFORTS IN SELF-HELP PROJECTS. HE SUGGESTED THAT TOWNSPEOPLE SHOULD RETURN TO THEIR HOME DISTRICTS DURING WEEK-ENDS AND ASSIST WITH LAND DEVELOPMENT -- AND THAT A LAW TO THIS EFFECT SHOULD BE INSTITUTED IF NECESSARY.

MAJOR SELF-HELP PROJECTS STARTED IN THE KAJIADO DISTRICT DURING 1969 INCLUDED 18 SCHOOLS, TWO AIRSTRIPS AND TWO DAMS, A COMMUNITY HALL AND THREE DISPENSARIES.
