  • Description

GBP647,095 changed hands at Southeby's London auction rooms Nov. 25 after the third largest sale of pictures ever held and the biggest this year.

The catalogue described the items for auction as 'Highly Important Impressionist and Modern Paintings and Drawings.' About 190 lots were put up for sale.

Most important of the collection, and most valuable, was French Impressionist Paul Cezanne's 'Paysan en Blouse Bleue'. Southeby's chairman and auctioneer, Mr. Peter Wilson, knocked it down for GBP145,000.

Paul Gauguin's 'To tiai Na ve I Te Rata' - I await the letter - was sold for GBP130,000....a record for a Gauguin. This was painted in 1899, during the artist's last year in Tahiti.

The world's leading art dealers and collectors flocked to London for this sale. The number of bidders was so great short-circuit TV was installed for an overflow section, which used telephones to bid.
