  • Description

ROME'S HILTON HOTEL WAS THE SCENE THIS WEEK FOR A BIG AUCTION OF ART TREASURES FROM FOUR EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. THE LOTS WERE FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF PRIVATE OWNERS IN HUNGARY, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, POLAND AND RUMANIA.

A SHORTAGE OF WESTERN CURRENCY WAS THE REPORTED REASON FOR THE AUCTION OF OLD MASTERS AND ANTIQUES. THE BROCHURE SENT TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS SAID THE AUCTION WAS "A REALLY EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTIC EVENT, WITHOUT PARALLEL IN ANTIQUARIAN HISTORY."
IT GOES ON: "FOR ABOUT 20 YEARS, THE GREAT ARISTOCRATIC AND 'HAUTE BOURGEOISE' FAMILIES OF HUNGARY, BOHEMIA, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, RUMANIA AND POLAND, IN ORDER TO SURVIVE, HAVE BEEN FORCED TO SELL A LARGE AND WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF WORKS OF ARTS TO THE RESPECTIVE GOVERNMENTS OF THOSE COUNTRIES.

"THE LATTER HAVE THUS AMASSED IN THEIR STOREROOMS A VARIED AND SUPERB ART COLLECTION. NOW IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO OFFER THIS TO ITALIAN COLLECTORS..."
LOTS INCLUDE PAINTINGS, SCULPTURE, TAPESTRIES, FINE PORCELAIN, SILVER, JADE AND ANTIQUE FURNITURE. THE THREE PAINTINGS SEEN ON FILM DEPICT "CALVARY", THE "MARTYRDOM OF CHILDREN", AND THE BIBLICAL "CASTING OUT OF THE MERCHANTS FROM THE TEMPLE".
