  • Description

The Prime Minister of Libya, Mr. Abdel Salam Jalloud, was in Damascus on Monday (16 June) for talks with Syrian leaders on unifying what he called "the ranks" against dangers threatening the Arab world.

Mr. Jalloud spent several hours with the Syrian President Hafaz A1 Assad discussing the general situation in the Middle East.

The Libyan leader was expected to broach his government's displeasure at President Sadat of Egypt for recognising the existence of Israel in a speech on his European tour earlier this month.

Last week, the Libyan Revolutionary Council held an emergency meeting to discuss President Sadat's stance regarding Israel and his decision to allow Israeli vessels to pass through the Suez Canal.

Libyan Radio reported that the Council was in touch with Arab heads of state seeking their opinion on "this great national betrayal".

After his meeting with President Assad on Monday, Mr. Jalloud said that Arab nations must be aware of a "Plot" aimed at preventing the Palestinians from recovering their territories. He did not, however, elaborate on the "Plot". He also asked Arab countries not to accept the existence of Israel.

SYNOPSIS: Libya's Prime Minister, Mr. Abdul Salam Jelloud, arrived in Damascus for talks on Monday. His Syrian counterpart, Mr. Mahmoud A1-Ayoubi, and several senior officials were at the airport to meet him. The visit has been interpreted as a ??? to rally support against Egyptian President Anwar Sadat for accepting the existence of Israel.

Mr. Jalloud later discussed the Middle East situation with President Assad. He was also expected to broach what Libyan authorities have described as the great national betrayal by President Sadat for recognising Israel's existence. The President has also been criticised for allowing Israeli vessels to pass through the Suez Canal. In a statement afterwards Mr. Jalloud warned the Arab world against what he called a "Plot" to prevent the Palestinians from recovering their territories.
