Background: American A-4 "Skyhawk" planes from the aircraft carriers Hancock and Bon Homme Richard carried out a series of bombing raids on North Vietnam during the period of June 15-17, 1967.

The targets included the Tam Da storage area; a highway bridge near Dong Khe; a storage and troop-staging area on Route 1-A, 20 miles north of the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Vietnam; boats on an inland waterway 10 miles southwest of Vinh, and a railroad train north of Thanh Hoa.

The bombing of the railroad train, shown in the final sequence of the film, resulted in multiple hits and touched off a secondary fire.
